St Kitts Dune Buggy Tour

Two and a half hours in a four seat buggy out of Wingfield Road above Old Road Town, with a stop at a beach. US$215 for the driver and US$75 for every passenger in the same buggy. These buggies are street legal, so whoever drives has to have a licence on them.

Everything confirmed in writing

The departure time and the permit question are settled with the operator before you pay.

Full refund if the run is pulled

If the ground will not take a buggy, you get the whole amount back.

A cancelled call costs nothing

If your ship skips St Kitts, anything already paid comes back in full.

What is the St Kitts dune buggy tour like?

The operator sets the exact route on the day, and it moves with the weather and the state of the ground. We do not publish a stop list we cannot hold you to.

    Wingfield Road

You set off a few minutes up from Old Road Town on the west coast. Wingfield Estate sits at the top of that road and is free to walk into. Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik are next door at Old Road, US$3 at the gate.

    Road and track

The buggies seat four and they are street legal, which puts part of the run on public road with traffic on it and part of it off the tarmac. You drive your own and a guide leads.

    The beach stop

There is a beach stop on the way. Nobody is watching the water, so the guide stays with the group at the beach. Chairs and umbrellas run about US$10 each where they are rented.

How long is the St Kitts dune buggy tour, and does it fit a cruise day?

Most ships in Basseterre are alongside from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, and two and a half hours fits inside that twice over. We will not promise a departure time before the operator has given us one. Book a day with room in it and we will take the earliest slot they run. December is busy, with 101 calls scheduled, so ask early.

What to bring

  • Your driving licence. In your hand and not in the hotel safe. The buggy is street legal and whoever takes the wheel has to produce one.
  • Closed-toe shoes. Sandals will stop you at the start.
  • Clothes you do not mind ruining. You will be dusty by the end of it and the back seats get the worst of it.
  • Swimwear and a towel. Wear the swimwear under your clothes, for the beach stop.
  • Sun cover and small notes. US dollars are accepted everywhere on the island.

Is it right for you?

  • Nobody drives without a driving licence on them. Passengers do not need one.
  • Self-drive in a hire car here needs a temporary local permit, EC$62.50 for three months or about US$23, and EC$125 for a year. Whether the buggy needs one depends on the route the operator runs that day. If a permit is required, you get the cost in writing before you pay.
  • No weight or height limit is published for the buggies. If you have a back or neck problem, ask us first and we will get the answer from the operator.
  • It suits a group of three or four who want one vehicle and one driver among them.

Questions people ask

What time does it leave?
We do not know until we ask. The operator sets the departure times and does not publish them, so we confirm the time with your booking and put it in writing before you pay. Anyone quoting you an exact buggy departure time off a website is guessing at it.
Do you need a local driving permit?
It depends on the route, and we confirm it with the operator before you pay. For context, driving a hire car yourself here needs a temporary local permit at EC$62.50 for three months, about US$23, or EC$125 for a year. A buggy that stays on estate tracks is a different case from one that runs on the public road, and these are street legal.
How many people fit in one buggy?
Four seats. One driver at US$215 and up to three passengers at US$75 each.
Is the beach stop safe for swimming?
The water is fine on a calm day and nobody is watching it for you. St Kitts beaches have no lifeguards and no warning flags, and Canada's government travel advice says rescue services here may not meet international standards. That is why the guide stays with the group at the beach.
What would a taxi cost for the same coast?
A full island tour by taxi, four to four and a half hours, is US$100 or EC$270 for one to four people. That shows you Old Road through a window. It does not put you behind a wheel.
