What does the full day island tour buy you?

The extra hour and a half goes mostly on Brimstone Hill and the back of the Romney Manor garden, with a sit-down lunch on the route. Mount Liamuiga stands over the whole route at 3,792 ft, and your guide will point out the crater rim on the days the cloud lifts off it.

    Romney Manor

The saman tree reckoned at over 350 years old is the one everybody photographs, and the paths behind it, with the mountain coming down into the property, are where people end up staying. Inside the house you can watch a batik piece go from wax to dye to the line, which takes longer than the ten minutes a rushed stop allows.

    Brimstone Hill

The four hour tour gives you the Citadel and the view. Five hours gives you the lower bastions as well, the cannon sitting in the embrasures, and twenty minutes to be up there without somebody counting heads.

    Black Rocks

On the Atlantic side, lava off Mount Liamuiga that ran into the sea and set there. Nobody swims on that coast. On a full day you get down onto the viewing point and along it, instead of looking at the Atlantic through a window.

    Lunch

You sit down at a local place on the route, you eat St Kitts food, and the vehicle waits with the engine off. The fish is usually the thing to have, and a vegetarian main is in the price.

    Timothy Hill

It closes the day, late enough in the afternoon that the light is off the water and down the peninsula, Caribbean on one hand and Atlantic on the other.

How long is the private island tour, and do you have to be on a ship?

Cruise calls sit alongside Basseterre from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, which is why nearly everything else sold on this island is cut to three or four hours. A guest in a hotel at Frigate Bay has no all aboard to run for, so the stops get the length they deserve. It still works on a ship day if your call is a long one and you dock early, and we will tell you plainly when your window is too tight. An 8:30am start gets you to Brimstone Hill shortly after the gate opens at 9:30am, the coolest and emptiest hour on that hill.

How much does the St Kitts private island tour cost?

US$659 covers up to four people, so two or three of you pay the same US$659 as four. Children 3 to 12 count inside the four and get a child portion at lunch. Anyone under 3 goes free. A fifth or sixth person adds US$145 an adult or US$89 a child 3 to 12. If we have another booking on your date we will offer to pair you and bring the price down, and the form asks whether you are willing to share.

What to bring

  • Closed shoes with a grip. Brimstone Hill is cobbled and steep, with steps and no handrail in places, and it is the one stop that punishes sandals.
  • Sun cover for the fortress. It is open rock with barely any shade and you will be on it before lunch.
  • A light layer. On the rainforest side a shower comes through most afternoons and is gone inside twenty minutes.
  • Small notes. Caribelle Batik takes cards and the roadside fruit stalls do not. US dollars are fine everywhere.
  • Your own bottle if you drink a lot of water. We carry bottled water, and five hours in this heat goes through more than you expect.

Is it right for you?

  • Anyone who needs a short day should skip this one. Five hours is five hours, and there is walking at three of the four stops.
  • Anyone who cannot do steps on uneven stone will see Brimstone Hill from the lower levels. The Citadel is cobbles and flights of steps with nothing to hold onto.
  • If you use a wheelchair, book it and say so on the form. An accessible vehicle can be arranged with notice at no extra charge, and before you pay we will tell you which stops you will get into, which have made paths, and which you will see from the road.
  • Five or more changes the vehicle and the price, so say so when you book.

Questions people ask

What would a taxi charge for a day like this?
The taxi fare for the full island tour, Historical Basseterre to Timothy Hill at four to four and a half hours, is US$100 or EC$270 for one to four people, or US$25 a head for five or more. Four people arranging it themselves pay that US$100, plus US$18 a head in entry fees, plus about US$25 a head for lunch, so roughly US$272 against our US$659. Then there is the clock. Waiting is US$5 or EC$13 for every 15 minutes after the first 15, and five hours with an hour at the fortress and an hour at lunch is eight of those on top. We are dearer either way. The difference buys a vehicle that is yours for the day, a guide for the whole of it, and nobody counting quarter hours while you eat.
Is it genuinely private?
Yes. Your party and your driver, nobody else in the vehicle, and the route is yours to change on the day.
Can we swap a stop for a beach?
Yes, and plenty of people put an hour at the South East Peninsula in place of Black Rocks. The beaches here have no lifeguards and no warning flags, and Canada's government travel advice says rescue services may not meet the standards you are used to, so your guide comes down to the water with the group.
Is the lunch any good, and what if we do not eat meat?
It is a local kitchen on the route and the fish is usually the thing to have. A vegetarian main is in the price. Tell us about allergies on the form and we hand that to the kitchen when we book.
How many people fit in the vehicle?
A family or a small group, with a larger vehicle for a party taking the whole day. Give us your numbers on the form and we size it to them.
Can we start early?
Yes. An 8:30am start gets you to Brimstone Hill shortly after the gate opens at 9:30am, which is the coolest and emptiest hour on that hill.

Send a request. Pay only once it is confirmed.

Tell us your date, how many adults and children, where to collect you, whether anyone needs an accessible vehicle, and anything we should pass to the kitchen. We confirm the vehicle and the lunch stop, come back inside one working day, and send the payment link after that. Nothing is charged before the day is confirmed.
